Going Green
When you visit Holmes Tree Farm to cut your Christmas tree, you can feel free to breathe deeply!! The trees on our 30 acres of plantation grown trees are absorbing carbon dioxide laden air and are sending out fresh, oxygenated air.
Did you know that one acre of Christmas trees produces the daily oxygen requirement for 18 people? In the US, there are approximately one million acres in production for growing Christmas trees. This translates to oxygen for 18 million people per day.
The removal of excessive carbon dioxide and other gases from the atmosphere by these trees also delays the earth-warming “greenhouse effect”. And because our trees are not transported great distances, as are artificial trees, we are further reducing the carbon footprint.
Christmas tree plantations also play a very active role in “going green” in other ways. The plantations provide scenic green belts, prevent land erosion, protect water supplies, provide healthy recreation areas for hikers, cross-country skiers, horseback riders, and bicyclists. They also function as safe refuges for many species of birds, deer and other wildlife.
Christmas trees are also recyclable. Trees from Holmes Tree Farm have been used to protect re-seeded clam beds at the beaches in Kennebunk, to prevent wave erosion at our beaches and inlets and for mulch in gardens and landscaping projects. This past year, we donated the stumps and brush left by customers to a local service club for a fund-raising project (the material was ground up and sold to a balsam products company and the money raised went to fund our local women’s shelter)
Buying Maine-grown Christmas trees and wreaths also helps preserve family farms by assuring that the owners can continue to farm rather than selling their land to developers. It also assures local people of jobs since farmers must hire help in all seasons of the year to assist with the growing of the trees as well as the selling of them.
Our Maine grown Christmas tree products are fresher, more pleasing to the senses (particularly the wonderful balsam fragrance), and offer families a chance to establish a warm and rewarding Christmas tradition-cutting your own tree with your family!
It really does make “scents” to cut your own tree at Holmes Tree Farm!
